This painting is part of an ongoing cycle in which I explore how horror
narratives, folklore, and superstition shape personal perception. The
project emerged from a fascination with horror films, inherited beliefs, and
recurring genre tropes, which gradually began influencing the way I
interpreted everyday experiences.
During a particular period of my life, I found myself reading ordinary
situations and symbols through the logic of horror, superstitions and
inherited folklore, as though uncertainty and hardship could be
understood through mystical or metaphysical explanations. Through
painting, I create atmospheres and stories that use the visual language of
horror while also drawing inspiration from lived and personal experience.
This work focuses on the idea of generational curses as a lens through
which I reflect on family history. I became interested in the patterns that
emerge during family gatherings, where stories, beliefs, and fears are
passed from one generation to the next, forming a cycle. Whether
understood as truth, myth, or superstition, these narratives shape
identities and influence how we see the world. At the same time, I became
aware of the tension between accepting these narratives and recognizing
the possibility of choosing a different way of seeing.
There is comfort in belonging to something that began long before us, yet
there is also the desire to break away from inherited fears and
predetermined experience. Even so, traces of these beliefs continue to
surface in everyday life, I still get paranoid when finding flies in my room.
Symbolic elements refer to these inherited stories and beliefs. Fragmented
composition functions like a puzzle assembled from photographs,
memories, and imagined scenes that become increasingly faded, altered,
and never fully complete.
